How to Tailor Your Resume to Any Job

A generic resume rarely stands out. Recruiters and ATS systems both favor applicants who clearly match the job. Here's how to tailor your resume for any role—without starting from scratch every time.

Step 1: Analyze the Job Description

Before you write a single word, read the job posting carefully. Highlight:

    • Required skills (must-haves)
    • Preferred qualifications (nice-to-haves)
    • Keywords and phrases used repeatedly
    • Industry jargon and terminology

Step 2: Map Your Experience to Their Needs

Create a mental (or physical) map: Which of your achievements demonstrate the skills they want? Look for:

    • Quantifiable results (percentages, numbers, time saved)
    • Relevant projects or responsibilities
    • Transferable skills from different roles

Step 3: Reorder and Reframe Bullet Points

Lead with the most relevant experience. For each role, put bullets that match the job description first. Reframe generic tasks into achievements that mirror their language.

Example: If the job wants "stakeholder communication," change "Met with clients" to "Led stakeholder communication across 5 departments, improving project alignment by 30%."

    Step 4: Adjust Your Summary

Your professional summary should speak directly to the role. Include 2–3 keywords from the job description and state your fit clearly.

Step 5: Update Your Skills Section

Add or emphasize skills that appear in the job posting. Remove or de-emphasize irrelevant ones. Match their wording when possible.
